Google’s Gemini app now has more than 1 billion monthly active users, CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Monday, making it the fastest-growing product in the company’s history and the 14th to reach the billion-user milestone.

According to official figures released by Google, 63% of Gemini users interact with the assistant using voice, while one in five Gemini Live sessions now involve camera or screen sharing rather than voice alone. Students are heavy users of file uploads: 38% of their school-related requests include an attachment. Google says the Gemini app generates more than 150 million images per day, and it can carry out automated tasks across more than 40 apps, such as booking a ride or making a dinner reservation.

On Apple devices, the app has more than 100 million monthly active users on iOS, while Mac users prompt Gemini roughly twice as much as users on other platforms, Google said.

The milestone puts the standalone Gemini app in close competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June, according to the tech publication TechCrunch. Google’s figure refers specifically to the Gemini app and excludes users who interact with Gemini through other channels, such as AI Mode in Search, which itself has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users globally.

TechCrunch also reported that the announcement comes shortly after Google’s second-quarter earnings call, where the company said Gemini had more than 950 million monthly users and that daily active users had tripled over the past year. The update lands ahead of the Made by Google event on August 12, where further Gemini-powered features are expected to be announced for Pixel devices.
