The police have filed a case against a Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader and a businessman in connection with the making of illegal election seals in Lakshmipur revealed on Tuesday.

The accused in the case are Sharif Hossain, Jamaat secretary of Ward 4 of Lakshmipur municipality, and Sohel Rana, proprietor of Maryam Printers.

Although the police arrested Sohel, Jamaat leader Sharif went into hiding following the incident.

Lakshmipur model police sub-inspector Humayun  Kabir filed the case against the two men early Wednesday, said case investigation officer SI Monir Hossain.

Acting on a tip-off, the police on Tuesday conducted a drive at the Maryam Printers in Lakshmipur sadar and detained its proprietor Sohel.

They also seized from there six 16-digit illegal voting seals, a computer, and a mobile phone.

Citing Sohel, the case statement stated that Jamaat leader Sharif ordered those five election seals on January 30 and sent a voice message to Sohel on WhatsApp in this regard.

The election seals were illegally made with the aim of casting fake votes in the upcoming national elections, said the case statement.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat candidates for Lakshmipur-3 constituency Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee and Rezaul Karim Silka held counter press conferences on Tuesday night regarding the incident.

Anee alleged that the incident was planned by Jamaat to commit fraud in the elections.

Rezaul claimed that the arrested individual was not a member of Jamaat and Sharif was expelled from the party.

SI Monir on Wednesday said that Sohel was produced before court and no remand was sought.

The other accused in the case absconded and efforts were under way to arrest him, he said.
