Sony has raised the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide, with the standard model increasing by $100 in the United States to $649.99, effective April 2.
The PS5 Digital Edition will now cost $599.99, while the high-end PS5 Pro will sell for $899.99. The PlayStation Portal remote player also goes up to $249.99, from $199.99. Similar price increases are being applied in Europe, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
The company said the move came after looking closely at rising costs in global supply chains. It marks the second price hike in less than a year, following a roughly $50 increase in the US last August.
Memory chips have become more expensive as manufacturers focus on supplying data centres for artificial intelligence, leaving fewer chips available for consumer electronics like game consoles.
The PS5 has been on the market for about six years. The higher price comes as the video game industry faces a slowdown. Fortnite maker Epic Games said weak console sales were among the reasons it cut 1,000 jobs earlier this week. Microsoft also raised Xbox prices last year.
