A Dhaka court on Monday set January 13 as the deadline for submitting the probe report in a case filed over the 2016 Bangladesh Bank reserve heist.

With Monday’s deferral, the probe report submission deadline has been deferred for the 91st time.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam set the new date after the investigation agency, the Criminal Investigation Department, failed to submit the report on Monday.

According to the case documents, unidentified hackers stole $101 million from the Bangladesh central bank’s accounts at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on February 5, 2016.

Of the stolen amount, $81 million was transferred to four accounts at the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation in the Philippines, while another $20 million was sent to a bank in Sri Lanka.

However, the $20 million transfer to Sri Lanka failed due to a spelling error by the hackers. Later, the BB was able to recover about $15 million from the accounts in the Philippines.

After 39 days of the incident, on March 15, 2016, BB deputy director Zubair Bin Huda filed a case with the Motijheel police station against unidentified people.

Later, the CID was tasked with the investigation, but it failed to complete the probe till now.

In 2019, Bangladesh also filed a lawsuit in a US federal court against RCBC, several casinos, 17 individuals and institutions, and three Chinese nationals, accusing them of planning and carrying out the theft.

RCBC and others countered that the matter was outside the jurisdiction of the court and sought dismissal.

In March 2020, the court rejected the case on technical grounds but said that Bangladesh could file a case with another court.

The Bangladesh Bank then filed a fresh case with New York County Supreme Court in May 2020.
