A case has been filed against around 150 people in connection with barring Brahmanbaria-2 MP Rumeen Farhana from paying tribute at the Shaheed Minar on February 21 in the district.
The case was filed this afternoon by one of Rumeen’s supporters, Ahad, at Sarail Police Station. Former Sarail upazila BNP secretary Anwar Hossain has been named as the main accused.
Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manzur Kader Bhuiyan said five individuals were named in the first information report, while 140 to 150 others were listed as unidentified accused. The case has been recorded and further legal steps will follow subject to investigation.
The incident took place shortly after midnight on Friday when Rumeen went to the Sarail Central Shaheed Minar to pay tribute at the first hour of International Mother Language Day. According to the complaint, BNP activists chanted slogans against her, and at one stage tension escalated into a scuffle. Her wreath was allegedly torn apart during the altercation.
She later left the area without paying tribute, escorted by her supporters, who subsequently blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Shahbazpur area for nearly an hour in protest.
Rumeen had won the Brahmanbaria-2 seat as an independent candidate after being denied nomination by BNP in the 13th parliamentary election and was later expelled from the party for contesting against its nominee.
