Different political parties and civil society organisations on Friday continued protests against the government›s decision to increase the retail power price.
They called on the government to withdraw the price hike and said that the common people’s sufferings would increase due to the power price hike.
Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu and executive coordinator Abul Hassan Rubel, in a press statement, called on the government to withdraw the power price hike and take steps to stop corruption in the power sector.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod central executive committee, in a press statement, also called on the government to withdraw the power price hike as it would increase the sufferings of the common people.
The Jasod held a rally in front of its central office in the capital’s Gulistan area at about noon protesting against the power price hike.
Socialist Party of Bangladesh( Marxist) will hold a rally in front of the National Press Club today at 11:00am, protesting against the power price hike.
Bhashani Onusari Parishad chairman Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu and secretary general Abu Yusuf Selim, in a press statement, said that the prices of essential commodities would increase due to the power price hike.
Democratic Rights Committee leaders, in a press statement, said that the BNP-led government had increased power prices to fulfil the conditions of the International Monetary Fund.
Central leader of the committee, Anu Muhammad, called on the government to withdraw the power price hike immediately.
The committee will hold a rally in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Manik Miah Avenue at 4:00 pm on Sunday, protesting against the increase in power and fuel prices.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission on Wednesday raised the retail power tariff by Tk 1.52 per kilowatt-hour or 16.68 per cent, effective from June 1, amid fear of further adverse impacts on the majority already hit hard by prolonged inflation.
