A teenage boy, injured in a gas explosion in Narayanganj’s Fatullah, died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka this afternoon, just hours after his father succumbed to his injuries -- raising the death toll from the same family to two.

Rakib, 16, died around 1:45pm while undergoing treatment, said Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, residential surgeon at the burn institute.

His father, Abdul Kadir, 50, who had also suffered burn injuries in the explosion, died around 10:45am today.

Dr Shaon said Rakib had sustained burns to 36 percent of his body. His twin brother Sakib, 16, and another brother, Mehedi, 17, remain hospitalised with burns covering 17 percent and 18 percent of their bodies respectively.

Their conditions remain critical as their windpipes were also affected, he added.

According to family members and relatives, the explosion occurred around 6:30am on May 11 at Kutubpur-Rakibazar near Shibu Market in Fatullah. Four members of the same family -- Abdul Kadir and his three sons -- suffered burn injuries in the incident. They were later admitted to the burn institute for treatment.
