Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan and Dhaka-18 lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain were allegedly attacked by supporters of a garment factory owner while visiting Uttarkhan in the capital today.
The incident took place around 2:00pm at Rajabari under Uttarkhan Police Station in DNCC's ward 46, where the administrator and the lawmaker had gone to inspect the site of an earlier assault on DNCC sanitation workers, according to the city corporation.
Earlier in the day, sanitation workers stationed at a Secondary Transfer Station (STS) in Rajabari were allegedly attacked by a group of people associated with Neptune Accessories Garments, the DNCC said.
According to the city corporation, 15 to 20 sanitation workers were injured in the attack. Four of them, who sustained serious injuries, were admitted to Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital for treatment.
In a press release, DNCC Public Relations Officer Md Zakir Hossain said that when the administrator, the lawmaker, the officer-in-charge of the local police station and other police personnel visited the area following the morning incident, an altercation broke out between the sanitation workers and representatives of the garment factory owner.
The situation later turned violent as "hired miscreants", allegedly deployed by the garment factory owner, attacked the administrator and the lawmaker in the presence of police, the press release said.
Several people were injured in the attack. Police detained three suspects, including one person from the factory owner's side, according to the DNCC.
After bringing the situation under control, police conducted an operation in the area.
Later, the administrator and the lawmaker visited Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara to inquire about the condition of the injured sanitation workers.
The administrator said those responsible for the attacks would face strict legal action, the press release added.
However, the garment factory owner could not be reached for comment in this regard.
