The six-day solo art exhibition of New york-based Bangladeshi artist Firoz Mahmud titled Multi-Layered Legacies concluded at the gallery of Japan embassy at Baridhara in Dhaka on Monday.
The exhibition was inaugurated in the presence of Japan ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi, who attended as chief guest and praised Mahmud’s ability to connect global narratives through a rich visual language, said a press release.
Presented in collaboration with Paper Rhyme Advertising Limited, this exhibition also commemorates the agency’s 20th anniversary, celebrating its partnership with the artist and its support of his global artistic journey.
Visitors to the exhibition experienced an immersive presentation of Mahmud’s multi-layered approach to history, identity and contemporary culture, reflecting through his distinctive multidisciplinary practice.
Firoz Mahmud is known for his engagement in major international exhibitions, including the Bangkok Art Biennale, Congo Biennale, Lahore Biennial, Dhaka Art Summit, Setouchi Triennale, Aichi Triennial, Sharjah Biennale, Cairo Biennale, Echigo-Tsumari Triennial and the Asian Biennale.
Over the course of his career, he has received numerous honours, including the Asian Art Council in New York; the COAL Prize, Paris, nomination; Queens Council on the Arts in New York; Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, OT Prize; and the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in Hong Kong.
He has been awarded both the Dilnasheen Khanom Gold Medal and the Shilpacharya Zainul Gold Medal from the Institute of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, and is a recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants in Canada.
Mahmud’s academic journey spans the Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka, Tama Art University, and Tokyo University of the Arts, where he completed his PhD.
He also served as a postgraduate scholar at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and has collaborated closely with the globally celebrated Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
He is represented internationally by Ota Fine Arts in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Singapore.
