A leader of Chhatra Dal's Savar municipality unit has been accused of killing his wife in Savar.
The accused, Hossen Roni, also known as Roni Islam – recently appointed assistant general secretary of the Savar municipality unit of Chhatra Dal – has been absconding since his wife's death.
Police recovered the body of his wife, Riya Moni, 21, from their home in the Chhayabithi area of Savar municipality on Monday afternoon.
According to police and family members, Riya visited her father's home on Saturday night. Roni brought her back to their house on Sunday night.
Police said Roni later called his mother and claimed that his wife had died by suicide.
After being informed, police went to the house and recovered Riya's body from a room that had been locked from outside.
Later in the evening, Saddam Hossain, the deceased's maternal uncle, filed a murder case with Savar Model Police Station against Roni.
According to the case statement, the couple had married around one and a half years ago, and had been having frequent disputes.
Noor Mohammad, investigation inspector of Savar Model Police Station, said, "Roni informed his mother over the phone that his wife had committed suicide. However, no evidence of suicide was found. Preliminary findings indicate that she was strangled to death."
He said police recovered the body from a bed after breaking open the lock and sent it to Suhrawardy Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Mahfuz Iqbal, general secretary of Dhaka District North Chhatra Dal, confirmed to The Daily Star that the Savar municipality unit committee was announced on Sunday and Roni was made an assistant general secretary.
"If the allegations are proven, organisational action will be taken against him, and he will be expelled from the party," he said.
