Mohammad Abul Hashem, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kalmakanda Police Station in Netrokona, has been withdrawn from duty after an audio recording purportedly featuring him discussing bribery and corruption went viral on social media.

Confirming this development, Netrokona district Superintendent of Police Md Tarikul Islam also said a three-member committee -- headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Hafizul Islam -- has been formed to investigate the matter. It has been directed to submit its report within five working days.

He also added that departmental action would follow if the allegations are proven.

The audio clip, which surfaced online yesterday, is widely claimed to feature Abul Hashem addressing fellow police personnel.

In the recording, the speaker is heard saying: "Police job is a type of business. Not everyone is involved in this business, but we protect one another. Everyone must work in coordination. You cannot exploit the OC. I will not deprive you. My constables must get what they deserve. I do not like taking away from someone what they rightfully deserve."

According to the audio, the speaker also makes remarks about monetary transactions linked to cases, coordination among police personnel and other operational matters. At one stage, the name of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is also mentioned.

However, Abul Hashem denied that the voice in the recording was his.

"This is not my statement. I do not even know how such a speech is being circulated," he said.
