An extortion case was filed against a former leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, the youth wing of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, along with seven or eight unidentified individuals on Saturday night for allegedly demanding Tk 5 lakh from a hospital in Dhaka.
Md Hanif, operation theatre in-charge of the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology Hospital, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station against Md Moin Uddin, 42, as the sole named accused, said Azizur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of the police station.
‘We have learnt that Moin is a former local Juba Dal leader. He currently holds no position in the party. Some of his followers claimed that he was preparing to contest the next city corporation election as a councillor candidate,’ Azizur added.
According to the case statement, the plaintiff alleged that Moin had been demanding Tk 5 lakh for a long time and had been threatening them for not paying the amount.
At around 8:00am on Friday, Moin, along with seven or eight unidentified individuals, allegedly went to the plaintiff’s house, demanded Tk 5 lakh, and threatened to harm his wife if the money was not paid.
Finding no other option, the plaintiff called his younger brother, Monir Talukder, 35. When he arrived, Moin allegedly gathered more people, creating chaos.
At one point, Moin reportedly assembled 50 to 60 people and created chaos in front of the hospital in the capital’s Shyamoli area.
