A BNP leader was critically injured after assailants opened fire and hacked him at his house in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram last night.

The injured, Md Osman, is the general secretary of Sarafbhata union BNP and a resident of ward 2 of the union, police said.

His mother, Achia Begum, 70, also suffered bullet wounds while trying to save her son during the attack.

Officer‑in‑Charge Md Helal Uddin Ahmed of South Rangunia Police Station said the attackers stormed the house around 8:00pm and fired indiscriminately. They also hacked Osman, leaving him seriously injured in the hand and abdomen.

“As his mother rushed forward to protect him, she was shot in both legs,” the OC said, adding that Osman’s father was also injured during the incident.

Locals rescued the family and took them to Rangunia Upazila Health Complex. Osman received primary treatment before being shifted to Evercare Hospital in Chattogram in critical condition, the OC added.

Police visited the spot soon after the incident.

Preliminary findings suggest the attack may have stemmed from internal conflict within the party, the OC said.

Police confirmed that Osman is a follower of BNP lawmaker from Chattogram‑7 constituency Hummam Quader Chowdhury.
