The Brazil national football team could be heading to the subcontinent for an international friendly later this year, with Kolkata emerging as the likely host city for a match in early October.
As per reports from ESPN Brasil, with some Indian media also using ESPN Brasil for this news, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is in advanced talks with Indian organisers to bring the five-time world champions to the region. Brazilian outlet Estadao subsequently confirmed the negotiations, with reports indicating that only final contractual details remain to be resolved.
However, Brazil's opponent for the proposed match has not yet been finalised, meaning there is currently no confirmation whether the Selecao will face the Indian national team or not.
The discussions between the CBF and Indian stakeholders reportedly began during the FIFA World Cup 2026 after images and videos of thousands of supporters wearing Brazil jerseys and celebrating went viral on social media. The extraordinary scenes caught attention in Brazil and played a direct role in opening talks to bring the team to India.
Kolkata was among the major centres of support, with streets decorated in yellow and green, alongside similar passion seen in Kerala, other parts of India, and neighbouring Bangladesh, where Brazil continue to enjoy an enormous following.
The proposed Kolkata fixture would complete a three-match itinerary for Brazil during the extended FIFA international window running from September 21 to October 6. Brazil already have two confirmed matches against Australia -- on September 25 in Townsville and September 29 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. The Kolkata match would take place in the opening days of October, following those two games.
While discussions and strong demands were also held regarding matches in Bangladesh, Singapore, and Qatar, negotiations have only progressed with India at this stage.
The CBF reportedly decided against playing a fourth game due to concerns over travel, player recovery, and preparation, allowing them to capitalise on their massive popularity in the subcontinent while keeping their schedule limited to three games.
Should the one-off match be finalised in Kolkata, it will add another chapter to the city's storied relationship with Brazilian football, where Pele famously played at Eden Gardens with the New York Cosmos against Mohun Bagan in 1977 before returning to the city decades later.
