The Bangladesh Students’ Federation on Tuesday left the Democratic Students’ Alliance, a combine of seven left student organisations, formed in 2022 to uphold their 13-point charter including the resignation of the then Awami League government and to establish a people’s government.

The organisation president Mitu Sarker and general secretary Sourav Roy in a joint statement announced the withdrawal of the Bangladesh Students’ Federation from the alliance.

The leaders said in the statement that, as part of the struggle against the fascist AL regime, Bangladesh Students’ Federation joined the combine on the basis of 13-point demands.

The relevance of the political programmes during the formation of the combine ended after the fall of the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024 amid a mass uprising, said the statement.

In the post-July uprising period, the Democratic Students’ Alliance has failed to present suitable political programmes and has become a platform for mere issue-based programs, it said.

It said the organisation believed that their current duty was not to ensure reforms but to make political preparations for a mass uprising to bring power into the hands of the workers, farmers, students and the masses for the overall freedom of the people.

It alleged that the present political position of the alliance was just the opposite.

The coordinator of the combine Dilip Roy told New Age that leaders of the student body did not discuss the matter or their disagreements in the combine’s meeting before issuing the statement.

As the Bangladesh Students’ Federation leaves the Democratic Students’ Alliance, the alliance now has six student organisations.

They are the Revolutionary Students’ Unity, the Bangladesh Students’ Union, the Socialist Students’ Front, the Democratic Students’ Council, the Revolutionary Student-Youths’ Movement and the Pahari Chhatra Parishad.
