The Excelerate-operated LNG FSRU (floating storage and regasification unit) at Moheshkhali ran out of LNG and stopped supplying the national grid from around 3pm today , multiple Petrobangla officials told The Daily Star.

With Summit’s FSRU currently supplying around 550 mmcfd, the country’s total gas supply has fallen below 2,200 mmcfd against the national demand of around 3,800 mmcfd.

The latest disruption comes only a day after The Daily Star reported that gas supply had improved from last week’s severe shortages, although industries were still struggling with low pressure and a larger share of available gas being diverted to power plants.

The Excelerate-operated FSRU, which can supply around 600 mmcfd of gas, first resumed partial operations on August 6 after remaining shut since a July 21 fire and subsequent technical problems.

It was disrupted again on August 14 before resuming operations on August 15.

The terminal has now exhausted its LNG inventory, according to the officials.

The two FSRUs have a combined regasification capacity of about 1,100 mmcfd.

Excelerate’s shutdown therefore removes up to roughly 600 mmcfd of potential LNG supply from the system.

The latest shutdown means Bangladesh is once again largely dependent on Summit’s terminal for imported LNG until another cargo can be delivered to Excelerate.

According to the government’s LNG procurement plan, the terminal is unlikely to resume operations before August 23 when the next consignment arrives.
