The Prime Minister’s Office has directed the Bogura deputy commissioner (DC) to rename three newly-formed unions in Shibganj and Mokamtala upazilas.
Bogura DC Toufikur Rahman confirmed to The Daily Star this evening that his office received the letter from the Prime Minister’s Office, instructing the renaming of Mirbari union in Shibganj along with Simanta and Diganta unions in Mokamtala.
The move follows widespread criticism after the three unions reportedly were named after the family title and two sons of LGRD State Minister Mir Shahe Alam. An opposition lawmaker raised the issue in parliament, and ruling party members admitted the matter had caused embarrassment.
Earlier, the prime minister had personally directed the DC to rename Simanta and Diganta unions. Today’s letter expanded the directive to include Mirbari union as well.
DC Toufikur Rahman said he has endorsed the letter and forwarded it to the Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), instructing public hearings with stakeholders, including journalists, before renaming.
Shibganj's UNO Ziaur Rahman confirmed receiving the directive and said work would begin swiftly.
A gazette notification issued on June 11, 2026, had declared the formation of Mirbari union in Shibganj, and Simanta and Diganta unions in Mokamtala. According to the notification, using the powers conferred under Section 11(1) of the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act-2009, Mirbari union was reconstituted consisting of 13 villages under Shibganj upazila in Bogura district.
Similarly, it stated that a new union named Diganta was formed consisting of eight villages under the newly formed Mokamtala upazila, and another new union named Simanta was formed consisting of 10 villages under Mokamtala upazila in Bogura district.
