Leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance on Thursday at a protest rally in the capital Dhaka said that they would wage tougher movements to compel the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party to implement the referendum verdict given by the people on February 12.

About 70 per cent of voters had casted their votes in favour of ‘yes’ in the referendum for the implementation of the July National Charter, but after assuming power the BNP was not interested to implement the verdict of referendum, they said at a protest rally in front of the National Museum.

The Jamaat-led 11-party alliance organised the rally to inaugurate its week-long mass contact programmes to press their demands, including the implementation of verdict of referendum.

Jamaat secretary general Mia Glam Parwar said that the BNP had created the present political crisis by not implementing the verdict of referendum, so they must resolve the issue implementing the verdict.

‘We would wage countrywide tougher movements to compel the BNP to implement the verdict,’ Parwar said.

He called on the leaders and activists of the alliance to go door to door of the people and to motivate them to support the movements.

Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish secretary general Maulana Jalal Uddin said that the BNP-led government was now behaving like fascist Awami League government and refuting to implement the July Charter.

National Citizen Party joint member secretary Joynal Abedin Shishir said that the people of the country would reject the BNP-led government, if it did not implement the referendum verdict.

Khelafat Majlish secretary general Ahmed Abdul Kader alleged that the BNP was trying to implement fascist rule in the country again.

Chaired by Jamaat joint secretary general and Jamaat-led alliance coordinator Hamidur Rahman Azad and Jatya Ganatantrik Party spokesman Rashed Prodhan, among others, spoke at the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest rally that paraded different roads in Shahbagh area and distributed leaflets among passers-by.
