Temporary cattle market wastages were found not cleaned along various city streets while sacrificial animal wastages were seen largely removed on Sunday, the third day after the first day of Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims.
Authorities of the two Dhaka city corporations said that they would take actions against the leaseholders for violating the term to remove the building materials of temporary enclosures of cattle markets.
City corporation cleaners on Sunday were working to clean several temporary cattle markets, according to officials of the city corporations.
Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, Dhaka South City Corporation administrator Abdus Salam alleged that several market leaseholders among the 11 failed to clear waste within the stipulated timeframe, forcing the DSCC authorities to clean the areas.
‘We have decided to confiscate the security deposits and blacklist the responsible leaseholders as strict legal measures,’ said the administrator.
The corporation also planned to significantly increase security deposit requirements for future cattle market leases as leaseholders did not seriously take the terms and conditions due to low security deposit amount.
‘No one responsible for causing public suffering will be spared, regardless of who they are,’ Salam warned.
He claimed that the city corporation removed 36,086 tonnes of sacrificial animal and cattle market waste from Thursday to Saturday exceeding the target of removing 33,942 tonnes.
The administrator also acknowledged temporary disruptions and inconveniences caused by the massive volume of waste and indiscriminate dumping of animal remains and hides.
He urged residents to report any remaining wastes to the DSCC central control room, assuring a quick response in addressing the complaint.
At a press conference on Saturday evening, Dhaka North City Corporation administrator Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Khan said that the city corporation removed a total of 18,344 tonnes of waste in the three days.
The administrator also said that four of the 10 cattle markets leased out by the DNCC were completely cleaned, while waste removal work at the remaining six markets were under way.
Cleaners of the city corporation on Sunday worked on cleaning several temporary cattle markets, including the ones adjacent to Dhaka Polytechnic Institute in Tejgaon Industrial Area, Iqra Madrassah at Rampura and Mirpur Kalshi Balur Math, said DNCC additional chief waste management officer Arifur Rahman.
Like the DSCC, the DNCC authorities were also planning to confiscate the security deposits paid by leaseholders for violating terms and conditions, said a DNCC officer seeking anonymity.
Earlier, on Friday, two DNCC and DSCC regional officials were suspended on the orders of prime minister Tarique Rahman over their negligence in removing sacrificial waste, reported United News of Bangladesh.
The prime minister ordered the action and expressed dissatisfaction after personally visiting different areas of the capital to inspect the progress of sacrificial animal waste removal activities.
Rasel Mia of Pallabi in Mirpur said on Friday that most animal sacrifices took place on Thursday and Friday.
He added that he had observed sacrificing of fewer animals this year compared to past years while the area was cleaned up very well due to political programmes of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
However, during visits to different parts of the capital on Friday, sacrificial animal waste was found lying in many areas, including Chawkbazar, Nazirabazar, Bakshibazar, Dhanmondi, Hazaribagh and Tejturibazar.
