One more person was killed and 31 others injured in attacks and clashes in post-election violence in five districts, namely, Bagerhat, Rajshahi, Natore, Gazipur and Sirajganj, in about 24 hours starting from Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Osman Gani, a supporter of an independent candidate in Bagerhat.
Also at least 13 people were injured in Natore, one in Rajshahi, five in Gazipur and seven were injured in Sirajganj, New Age correspondents in the districts reported.
Moreover, properties were also vandalised at different places.
Osman Gani died after he was heavily injured in a clash between the supporters of Bangladesh Nationalist Party nominated and independent candidates in Chitabari village of Dhopakhali union at Kachua upazila on Friday evening.
Including Osman at least five people from both sides were injured in the clash, said the Kachua police.
Osman succumbed to his head injuries at Khulna Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning, Kachua police officer-in-charge Shafiqul Islam said.
‘We were informed of the death in the afternoon (Saturday),’ he said, adding that Osman Gani was a supporter of independent candidate MAH Salim, also an expelled Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader, who contested for Bagerhat-2 constituency.
The BNP party nominated Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain.
Both of the candidates, however, were defeated in the 13th parliamentary polls held on February Thursday.
Legal actions would follow regarding the death, the OC said.
In Natore, at least 13 people were injured and six houses were vandalised during a clash between the activists of BNP and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at Dhanaidaho village under Baraigram upazila on Saturday, New Age staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported.
According to local people and the police, Jamaat activist Sakib Hossain and BNP activist Ratul Ahmed locked into a scuffle over the election results at Dhanaidah Bazar on Friday night following local leaders scheduled an arbitration meeting on Saturday morning, but before that the clash escalated again.
Natore district police superintendent Abdul Wahab said that on information the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
In Rajshahi, supporters of lawmaker-elect from BNP for the Rajshahi-5 constituency Nazrul Islam Mondol allegedly gave a serious beating to a man named Ahsan Habib on Saturday afternoon at Biraldah Bazar of Puthia upazila.
Local people said that victim Ahsan Habib worked as a supporter of Isfa Khairul Haq Shimul, who failing to get nomination from the BNP, contested the polls as an independent candidate.
In Sirajganj, seven people, including a woman, were injured in a clash between two factions of BNP at Gurma village of Madhainagar union in Tarash upzila at around 10:30am on Saturday following a heated argument over the just concluded polls, New Age correspondent in the district reported.
Local people said that BNP men led by Amin Uddin, former organising secretary of the party’s Madhainagar union unit, vandalised several houses over a row stemming from not supporting lawmaker elect for Sirajganj-3 Ainul Haque in the election.
Tarash police officer-in-charge Habibur Rahman said that the situation was immediately brought under control.
In Gazipur, at least five people were injured and a local party office was vandalised in a clash between two BNP factions in Satayish area of west Tongi early Saturday over establishing dominance, New Age correspondent in the district reported.
Tongi West police OC Shahin Khan said that a written complaint was filed and the incident was being investigated.
In Jashore, a parked bus, owned by local BNP leader Abu Bakkar Siddique, in Bahadurpur area was set on fire early Saturday, alleged its owner.
His two buses were used to carry BNP men before the national elections, New Age correspondent in the district reported.
In Chandpur, unidentified miscreants torched an office of ousted Awami League in the district town on Friday night, United News of Bangladesh reported.
In Munshiganj, the army at a press conference on Saturday claimed that deceased Jasim Nayeb, who was killed on Friday, had a previous dispute with rival Nasir group and the attack took place after the election over a family dispute, New Age correspondent in the district reported.
Munshiganj additional superintendent of police Firoz Kabir on Saturday morning said that no case was filed over the killing and none was arrested yet.
