At least 219 people were killed and 511 were injured in 409 road crashes in Dhaka city in 2025, said a Road Safety Foundation report published on Wednesday.

The report also read that Jatrabari, Demra, Mohammadpur, Kuril Bishwa Road and the airport road areas became ‘hotspots’ for road accidents.

The report was prepared based on reports published in different national dailies, online news portals, different electronic media and information gathered through own sources.

It read that among the fatalities 80.36 per cent or 176 were men, 11.41 per cent or 25 were women and 8.21 per cent or 18 were children.

Of those killed the highest 47.03 per cent were pedestrians, followed by 43.37 per cent motorcyclists and their pillion riders, and 9.58 per cent were transport workers and passengers of vehicles, including bus, rickshaw, CNG-run auto-rickshaw.

The highest percentage of road accidents, 41.56 per cent, occurred at night followed by 18.33 per cent in the morning, 13.44 per cent in the afternoon, 11.24 per cent in the early morning, 9.53 per cent in the afternoon, and 5.86 per cent in the evening.

In cases of involvement of different vehicles in the accidents, trucks (including garbage carriers), covered and pickup vans and tankers were involved in the highest percentage of road accidents—35.14 per cent—followed by buses in 24.87 per cent, motorcycles in 21.53 per cent, three-wheelers (auto rickshaw-CNG-Leguna human hauler) in 11.82 per cent, microbuses-cars-sports utility vehicles in 4.12 per cent, and rickshaws in 2.48 per cent accidents.

Reviewing the road accidents, the report read that due to sheer mismanagement in traffic operation road crashes and traffic congestion are increasing in the capital city.

Most of the accidents are occurring at night and in the morning since goods-laden heavy vehicles run inside the capital between 10:00pm and 6:00am in the absence of bypass roads.

The situation has led to frequent pedestrian death particularly when they try to cross roads in the midst of running goods carriers.

Restlessness of drivers particularly caused by long and frequent traffic gridlock also invariably contributes to rising road crashes, the report observes.

Among specific reasons pointed out in the report responsible for road accidents are: movement of vehicles lacking fitness, reckless driving, movement of vehicles of different speeds on same roads, encroachment of the footpaths, unusable footbridges, lack of road signs and signals, lack of awareness among road users and extortion on roads.

The foundation in the report recommends introduction of company-based bus services in the capital, removal of unfit from the roads, separate lane for buses, own bus facilities in the educational institutions, introduce safe alternatives for auto-rickshaw, freeing footpaths from encroachment, cooperation among government authorities, abiding by traffic rules, running awareness campaigns and prevention of extortion on roads.
