Dhaka University authorities have suspended three teachers, including Sociology Department Professor Sadeka Halim, over separate allegations.

Besides, four other teachers have been relieved of their academic and administrative responsibilities over various allegations.

The decisions were taken at a Syndicate meeting held on Tuesday, chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam, according to a press release issued by the university’s Public Relations Office on Thursday.

According to the press release, Prof Sadeka Halim was suspended over allegations of conduct "unbecoming of a teacher both in and outside the classroom, as well as offences involving moral turpitude." She is a former vice-chancellor of Jagannath University.

The university also suspended Prof Md Shafiqul Islam and Prof Afroza Shelley of the Department of Nuclear Engineering based on complaints from students of different batches and the findings of an inquiry committee, the press release said.

The Syndicate relieved Prof Md Abdul Muhit of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology from the position of department chairman and barred him from all academic and administrative duties at the university.

The university said the action was taken over allegations of activities contrary to the spirit of the July Uprising, spreading propaganda against the university administration and the government, supporting a banned organisation, and issuing threats.

On the same grounds, the Syndicate also relieved Prof Abu Sara Shamsur Rouf of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Prof Md Rafiqul Islam (Rafiq Shahriar) of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies from all academic and administrative responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Prof Mohammad Bahauddin of the Department of Persian Language and Literature was also barred from all academic and administrative duties over “various irregularities” in the department and allegations of plagiarism.
