A man handed his son over to police after the latter was allegedly involved in the murder of a security guard at a car servicing centre in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.

Police arrested Jewel Rana, 25, from his home in Bow Bazar area near Senuwa Bridge early today, based on information provided by his father, Abdul Khalek.

Police also seized a stick, a bicycle and a mobile phone allegedly used in the incident.

The deceased, Abdur Rahman, 55, of Hajipara area in Thakurgaon town, worked as a security guard at the servicing centre near the Palli Bidyut office in Jagannathpur union of Sadar upazila.

Jewel also worked there as a night guard.

Mazharul Alam, sub-inspector of Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station and investigating officer of the case, told The Daily Star that Jewel was dismissed from his job three days before the incident, on Saturday.

He said Jewel went to Abdur Rahman around 1:00pm yesterday to collect Tk 23,000 owed to him.

Abdur Rahman told him that Tk 13,000 would be deducted from the amount to cover the cost of repairing a missing windowpane made of Thai glass and other equipment that had gone missing while Jewel was on duty, and that he would be paid the remaining Tk 10,000, the officer said.

Jewel, however, claimed that Abdur Rahman was also deducting the cost of other repairs from his dues, according to police.

An argument broke out between the two, and at one point Jewel allegedly hit Abdur Rahman repeatedly on the head and other parts of his body with a stick, killing him on the spot, police said.

Later that night, locals found Abdur Rahman's body inside the servicing centre and informed police. Police recovered the body and sent it to the Thakurgaon General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police said Jewel went home that night and told his mother about the killing. She then informed her husband, Abdul Khalek, who contacted police.

Abdur Rahman’s son, Ashraful Islam Ratul, filed a murder case with Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station against Jewel over the incident.

Process is underway to produce Jewel before a court, said SI Mazharul Alam.
