The timeless tragedy Oedipus by Greek playwright Sophocles is set to return to the stage at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, as Driesshokabbo Theatre continues its regular run of the production.
The play will be staged on February 9 at 7 pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka. Advance ticket sales for the performance have already begun.
Driesshokabbo Theatre first brought “Oedipus” to the stage in November last year and has since been presenting the production regularly, drawing consistent interest from theatre audiences. The play has been translated into Bangla by Syed Ali Ahsan, while direction is handled by Habib Masud.
Actor H M Motaleb plays the titular role of Oedipus. The cast also includes Jhumu Majumder, Ahad Bin Murtaza, Naimul Islam Siam, Md Munna Mollah, Ashikul Islam, Rimon Saha, Utpal Chandra Barman, Kanta Kamrun, Omar Faruk Khan Fahim, among others.
With its exploration of fate, truth, and human downfall, “Oedipus” remains one of the most enduring works of classical theatre, and its continued staging reflects a sustained interest in revisiting global dramatic classics through contemporary Bangladeshi theatre practice.
