NCP Convener and Dhaka-11 lawmaker Nahid Islam, referring to the BNP government, has said no government in Bangladesh’s history has become “so unpopular in such a short time,” wondering what their fate would be in the next six months.
He made the remark this afternoon while speaking as a special guest at a rally in Suhrawardy Udyan, organised by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, demanding implementation of the July Charter in line with the referendum verdict.
“We want the July Uprising and the martyrs’ families to be respected,” he said, adding that the party was working both on the streets and in parliament.
He said the July Uprising had created hopes for change, but alleged that BNP had obstructed reforms from the beginning and later gave notes of dissent against key proposals at the Consensus Commission.
“The BNP was born through a referendum. But after the mass uprising, they are now rejecting the referendum. Through this, BNP has actually started denying its own existence,” he said.
Warning BNP against following Awami League’s path, Nahid said the public and youth would resist any attempt to undermine reforms.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman, LDP Chairman Col (retd) Oli Ahmad, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Maulana Mamunul Haque, and other senior leaders of the 11-party alliance also spoke at the rally.
