A legal notice has been served on Kushtia-3 lawmaker and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Amir Hamza for allegedly making defamatory and derogatory remarks about Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawmaker and freedom fighter Fazlur Rahman.
The notice was served on Thursday by advocate Nurul Islam on behalf of Mohammad Yash Imon, member secretary of the Kushtia district unit of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti.
According to the notice, Amir Hamza allegedly made offensive and derogatory comments about Fazlur Rahman, the Kishoreganj-4 lawmaker, in public speeches as well as on social media platforms.
The complainant alleged that Amir Hamza’s comments damaged Fazlur Rahman’s dignity and public image and caused social humiliation, mental distress, and reputational harm.
The legal notice asked Amir Hamza to provide a written and satisfactory explanation within 10 days of receiving it.
It also warned that legal proceedings would be initiated if no response is provided within the stipulated time.
Jatiya Chhatra Shakti leader Yash Imon said the legal action was taken to uphold the dignity of a freedom fighter.
‘Fazlur Rahman is a veteran freedom fighter. Any form of derogatory remarks against him is unacceptable,’ he said, adding that legal steps were necessary to ensure accountability.
Amir Hamza, however, could not be reached over the phone for comment.
On April 21, the Chauhali Cognisance Court in Sirajganj issued an arrest warrant against Amir Hamza in a defamation case filed over his alleged derogatory remarks about the power, energy and mineral resources affairs minister and BNP leader Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku.
