A US congressional staff-level delegation is set to visit Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar.

Bangladesh's Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman confirmed the 10-member delegation's visit, scheduled for Aug 26-28.

He told bdnews24.com the trip was part of the US's routine rounds of delegation visits, with the team set to assess overall conditions at the Rohingya camps.

"The US is the single largest funder of aid to the Rohingya. Washington's stance is to ensure its taxpayers' money is being spent properly. This visit is essentially aimed at seeing exactly how that money is being used," he added.

Mizanur described the visit as something akin to an audit, with the delegation touring camps where US-funded programmes operate.

Foreign ministry officials said US Congress Senior Legislative Assistant Noelle Dana is leading the delegation, which will also include two United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) officials.

Officials said the delegation would visit six camps in Ukhiya on Aug 26-27, followed by two camps in Teknaf on Aug 28.
