Environment, forest and climate change minister Abdul Awal Mintoo on Wednesday told Jatiya Sangsad that from July 13, 2010, to March 31, 2026, the authorities imposed Tk 622.80 crore in compensation on 18,617 environmentally polluting establishments across Bangladesh.
‘However, only Tk 295.98 crore had so far been realised,’ he said.
The minister disclosed the information in his written answer to Chattogram-12 lawmaker Mohammad Enamul Haque’s question during the 24th sitting of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad’s first session.
Mintoo said that under the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995 (amended 2010), the Department of Environment assesses environmental damage and imposes compensation accordingly.
The government was continuing efforts to recover the remaining compensation, he added.
Mintoo also informed the House that as part of enforcement drives, utility connections of 530 illegal factories were disconnected between January 2019 and March 2026.
