There is always a common goal for Bangladesh, one that remains far from reach regardless of the administration in charge: Creating an equitable nation. Too often, it is those most vulnerable, most marginalized, who are forgotten when pledges are made.

Nowhere is this more salient than with the pledges made to the disability community by all parties, including the BNP, before the elections. Commitments were voiced about accessibility, inclusion, and ensuring that persons with disabilities would no longer be left behind in Bangladesh’s development journey.

It is imperative, therefore, that this community is not forgotten once again and the cycle of neglect, where they are only remembered before votes are cast, must end. If Bangladesh is to build an equitable society, then support for its most vulnerable citizens must be treated not as charity, but as a fundamental responsibility.

The challenges faced by persons with disabilities continue, from limited access to education, inadequate healthcare, barriers to employment, and a lack of infrastructure that allows them to participate fully in public life. These are daily realities that keep millions excluded from opportunity. Addressing them requires policy, funding, and sustained political will.

The government must now demonstrate that its promises were not empty gestures. From enacting legislation that enforces accessibility standards to expanding social protection programs to ensuring that disability rights are mainstreamed, these are just a few of the steps that must be taken. Above all else, the government must start listening to the disability community itself, whose voices must guide the policies that affect their lives.

Bangladesh cannot claim to be on the path to equity if it continues to overlook those who are most marginalized.
