BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected president after securing 255 votes in the presidential election, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance candidate Col (retd) Oli Ahmed received 88 votes.
AMM Nasir Uddin, the chief election commissioner and election officer for the presidential election, announced the result following three hours of polling at the Jatiya Sangsad, which ended at 5:00pm today.
He said all 349 lawmakers cast their votes in three transparent ballot boxes. Of the ballots issued, 343 were used and six remained unused.
Nasir Uddin said all 343 used ballots were counted as valid. Four ballots were replaced in accordance with Article 10 of the Presidential Election Act, 1991.
Three election commissioners and the EC secretary were present during the polling and counting.
