A newborn girl was rescued alive from beside a dumpster at Gajaria Upazila Health Complex in Munshiganj early today after hospital staff heard her crying.
Hospital officials said the infant was found around 1:00am near a garbage heap beside the hospital’s dumpster. Staff alerted the nurses on duty, who, with the help of attendants of admitted patients, rescued the baby.
The newborn was extremely hungry when she was found. She was admitted to the health complex, where doctors provided emergency treatment and fed her.
Dr Nusrat Farjana Khan, residential medical officer of Gajaria Upazila Health Complex, said the baby appeared to have been born shortly before she was discovered. She also had injury marks on her head.
After receiving primary treatment, the baby was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced care, the doctor said.
Gajaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Umme Hafsa Nadia visited the hospital after being informed of the incident.
She said authorities arranged for the baby's transfer to Dhaka Medical College Hospital to ensure proper treatment and would investigate who abandoned her before taking legal action.
