Philip Clark, a partner at the venture capital firm Thrive Capital, has recently stated that AI tools are enhancing the work of software engineers, rather than replacing their jobs, as per a recent report by Business Insider.
Clark, during a podcast interview, argued that in his portfolio of companies, which includes investments in AI coding tools like OpenAI's Codex and Cursor, he cannot name a single one that has laid off engineers due to AI adoption. "I'm an investor in a lot of companies that use AI tools. I cannot think... of a single one that has laid off engineers because of these tools," he said.
Clark described AI as more of an augmenting force than a substituting one. He suggested that while companies might grow without adding as many new hires, the tools are primarily boosting productivity. "You can actually make everyone the 10x or proverbial 100x engineer in a really exciting way," he said, referencing the emerging concept of ultra-productive engineers empowered by AI assistants.
His comments arrive amid concerns about AI's impact on the job market, particularly among younger workers. According to Business Insider, a recent survey indicated 62% of college seniors familiar with AI tools worry about their job prospects, and software engineering job postings have recently hit a multi-year low, though the direct cause is difficult to isolate.
Clark remained optimistic about the long-term shift, suggesting AI will take over more menial tasks. He argued this would reallocate human creativity and intelligence toward solving major challenges in fields like oncology, sustainable mining, and space research. "The beauty of AI is that we're going to be able to reallocate a bunch of human brainpower... to these most important problems," Clark said.
