The Inter Services Public Relation (ISPR) Directorate said a high-level investigation committee has been formed following the death of a detainee during a joint forces operation in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga district.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, ISPR said that based on specific intelligence information, a special joint forces operation was conducted at around 11:00pm on Monday, in Jibannagar with the objective of recovering illegal arms.

During the operation, Md Shamsuzzaman alias W (50) was detained from a pharmacy shop adjacent to the Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex on allegations of possessing illegal arms, the release said.

According to ISPR, acting on information provided by the detainee, the patrol team searched the said pharmacy and recovered one 9mm pistol, one magazine, and four rounds of ammunition.

After the operation was completed, the detained individual suddenly fell ill and lost consciousness. He was immediately taken to the Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead at approximately 12:25am.

ISPR described the incident as unexpected, unfortunate, and in no way acceptable.

The press release said the camp commander of the concerned camp and all army personnel who participated in the operation have been withdrawn to the cantonment. A high-level investigation committee has been formed to ascertain the exact cause of the incident.

ISPR added that legal action will be taken under the Army Act against those found guilty following the investigation.
