A man was killed and at least 30 others were injured in a clash reportedly over local dominance between residents of Suryakandi and Dharanti villages in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as 55-year-old Khadim Mia of Dharanti village, said police.
He sustained critical injuries during the violence and taken to Sarail Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
"A person was brought to the health complex with severe wounds and was declared dead on arrival," confirmed its resident medical officer Dr Md Ali Azam Rakib.
The clash broke out around 7:45pm at Kalikachho Bazar and continued until about 10:45pm, said police.
Quoting locals, Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monjur Kader Bhuiyan said the violence erupted after one party demanded payment for fishing mats purchased for use in a local wetland. The altercation quickly escalated into a full-fledged clash.
Police and locals said the clash involved supporters of one Mosharraf and of one Khadim Mia of Dharanti village. Besides the financial dispute, the two groups had a longstanding rivalry over territorial dominance.
Police rushed to the scene after receiving information and eventually brought the situation under control. At least 30 people from both sides were injured in the incident, said police.
OC Monjur said police remained at the scene late into the night and that drives would be conducted to arrest those involved in the clash.
