The under-construction National Cricket Ground in Purbachal has drawn attention for the wrong reasons after reports surfaced that a large quantity of soil meant for the stadium had gone missing.

BCB Grounds Committee chairman Khaled Mashud Pilot visited the venue on Tuesday and said an inquiry committee would be formed to investigate the matter.

According to media reports, around 12,500 cubic feet (CFT) of soil is unaccounted for.

"We have to form a very transparent inquiry committee so that the whole scenario comes out regarding who is involved," Mashud told reporters.

"I learned that about 20,000 CFT of soil was supposed to be delivered to Purbachal. But measurements show that only around 7,500 CFT is present, meaning almost 12,500 CFT of soil is missing," he said. "The bill reflects an order for 20,000 CFT of soil, but the measurement found only 7,500. We have to look into the whole thing."

Mashud, who recently took over the grounds committee from BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul, added that he would step down if he cannot ensure proper functioning of the committee within six months.

"If within three to six months I see I am unable to deliver good work, I will quit. I didn't come here for the chair; I came for the development of cricket," he concluded.
