A Rohingya youth was beaten to death by a mob at a refugee camp at Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Friday evening, according to the police and local people.
The deceased was identified as Nur Hasan, 32, son of Mostafa Kamal, resident of the same camp.
Camp residents claimed that the deceased was a robber.
The incident occurred at the end of Nur Ali Road at Leda Rohingya Camp 26 under Hnila union at Teknaf.
Officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Saiful Islam said that a gunfight had taken place between two gangs in the nearby hilly area before Nur Hasan was lynched.
He said that other Rohingyas got hold of Nur Hasan while he was moving from one hill to another in the evening and severely beat him.
The officer-in-charge also added that he was rescued at around 8:30pm and taken to an IOM-run hospital from where he was later shifted to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex for better treatment. There Nur Hasan died while undergoing treatment.
The man had two cases against him on charges of robbery and illegal possession of arms.
The body was recovered and taken to the police station. Legal action was under way, the police official said.
