With the election campaigns for the upcoming election officially beginning yesterday, there is a need, even before votes are cast, to ensure that the weeks of campaigning are done right.

This starts with following the election code of conduct - which has already seen plenty deviate away from them and not follow through with the rules, as seen in the numerous posters across the country, despite there being a ban on posters.

The Election Commission (EC) has warned of strict enforcement, including fines, imprisonment and even cancellation of candidacy for violations - however, we remain sceptical about whether the EC would follow through with its words and truly hold parties and candidates accountable for violations.

The onus is also on political parties to ensure that their campaigning activities do not interfere with people’s day to day lives. From blocking streets and causing traffic gridlocks to resorting to more nefarious and intimidation tactics, we must reject approaches commonly seen in the past and embrace a more constructive, inclusive approach to campaigning.

The next elections are shaping up to be among the most consequential in our nation’s history. If we are indeed serious about becoming a better Bangladesh, one that embraces the principles of democracy, then we must start with our political parties and leaders rejecting the campaign tactics of old.

The world’s eyes are on Bangladesh over the next few weeks leading up to February 12, and avoiding the pitfalls and unrest that have normally defined the election season will send the message that we can have a peaceful election season.
