The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gold Cup Football Tournament got underway in Tangail today after an 11-year hiatus, with Tangail Sadar making a flying start by defeating Basail Upazila 3-0 at the Tangail Stadium.
The opening day featured six matches as all 12 upazilas of the district began their campaigns in the tournament, which is being held in a home-and-away league format. Each participating team is allowed to field up to five foreign guest players.
Following the league stage, the Super Six round will be held at Tangail Stadium from July 15 to 19. The semi-finals are scheduled for July 28 and 29, while the final will take place at the same venue on August 1.
State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku inaugurated the tournament as the chief guest.
Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Sanjay Kumar Mahanta, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Md. Adibul Islam, District BNP President Hasanuzzammil Shaheen, Former Member Secretary Mahmudul Haque Sanu, Tangail District Sports Association Ad Hoc Committee Member Secretary Ariful Haque Prince, along with administration officials, political leaders, sports organisers and local dignitaries were present.
