Reddit has begun testing audio and video versions of selected posts, allowing users to listen to or watch content that would traditionally appear as text on the platform.

The limited experiment covers selected English-language posts and gives participating users the option to either “read” or “play” available content. Reddit said the test was designed to assess whether the formats are useful and could be expanded more widely.

The move follows the popularity of videos on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels in which Reddit posts and comments are narrated or converted into short-form video content. Reddit chief executive Steve Huffman discussed the trend during the company’s second-quarter earnings call.

The audio and video versions will not replace the original text posts. Users will still be able to read and respond to the original post and its comments.

The test is initially available on the web, with Reddit also bringing it to its iOS and Android apps. The company has previously experimented with short-form video and recently added support for videos in comments.
