LGRD Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today accused the opposition of misleading the public over the July Charter, saying BNP remains committed to implementing every provision of the document.

"The opposition is saying that if the demand to implement the July Charter is not met in parliament, the issue will be settled on the streets. This issue is being raised to mislead people," Fakhrul said while speaking at a memorial meeting at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of National Press Club in Dhaka.

"We signed the July Charter together. All the parties that joined the [July 2024] movement signed it. We have said repeatedly that we will implement every word of the July Charter," he said.

Fakhrul also said BNP had never agreed to proportional representation in the upper house. "There was no discussion with us about that part of the referendum. I myself said at the time that the nation had been deceived. The reform commission brought those proposals without our consent."

He said the July Charter clearly states that the elected party would implement it in line with its election manifesto.

"We are committed to implementing the July Charter, just as we are committed to our 31-point proposal. But it should be implemented in the way we agreed. The opposition is wrongly claiming that we do not want to implement it," the BNP leader said.

Fakhrul said that BNP had introduced major reforms in the country, including the caretaker government system. "They talk about reforms. Who brought reforms to this country? The BNP did."

"We passed the caretaker government system in parliament... These claims are being made to mislead the people," he added.

He accused opposition leaders of trying to sway public opinion with “appealing rhetoric,” adding that people are capable of judging BNP’s stance on constitutional amendments for themselves.

"We have always said that we want to amend the constitution. We have never talked about reforming the constitution," he said.

The minister also said BNP had secured a two-thirds majority on the basis of its manifesto and there should be no confusion over its position. He alleged that the opposition wanted to use the July Charter "only to come to power".

"We do not want July to become another tool for gaining power. The July movement of 2024 was the outcome of our 18-19 years of struggle against fascism. That is how we reached this stage," he said.
