Switzerland-based Educators Without Borders International and the Human Resource Development Institute of Daffodil International University have jointly organised a two-day international workshop titled Essentials of University Academics in Contemporary World: Building Teaching Capability and Developing Research Skills at the Daffodil Plaza in Dhaka recently.
The workshop was organised in an effort to strengthen teaching effectiveness, research capacity and overall academic excellence in higher education, said a press release on Saturday.
Eighty-two university teachers and academics from 16 public and private universities in Dhaka and Chattogram participated in the programme.
Renowned academics, researchers, and experts from Australia, Malaysia and Bangladesh served as resource persons in various sessions.
Professor Md Saidur Rahman, member of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, was present as chief guest at the inaugural session, which was chaired by Professor Mohammad Masum Iqbal, pro-vice-chancellor of Daffodil International University.
Tahsina Yasmin, acting director of HRDI, delivered welcome address while Mouza Al Jabi, executive director of EWBI, attended as guest of honour at the session.
Throughout the two-day workshop, participants engaged in in-depth discussions on modern teaching methodologies, curriculum development, research design, academic writing, publication strategies and international research collaboration.
The sessions provided participants with hands-on learning opportunities and practical insights to enhance their academic and research practices.
Notable speakers included Professor Emeritus Shahjahan Khan OAM from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia; Professor Dato’ Mohamad Fauzan Noordin of International Islamic University Malaysia; Professor Yiarul Kabir, vice-chancellor of Jashore University of Science and Technology; and Professor Shamshuddin Ahmed from the Military Institute of Science and Technology.
The speakers emphasised that in a rapidly evolving global academic landscape, university educators must go beyond classroom teaching and develop competencies in research, innovation, international collaboration and knowledge-based leadership.
Special focus was given to building strong research cultures in higher education institutions and adopting student-centred, outcome-based and technology-driven teaching approaches.
Professor Mohammad Anowar Hossain, member of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, was present as chief guest at the closing ceremony, which was chaired by Shahjahan Khan OAM. Professor Mohammad Masum Iqbal also attended as special guest at the session.
