For more than two decades, world football has been shaped by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s extraordinary rivalry. Their brilliance defined an era, rewriting records, collecting trophies and inspiring generations of fans.

Then came Kylian Mbappe -- the next phenomenon, a player who seemed destined to inherit the throne. In 2022, Messi and Mbappe produced one of the greatest World Cup final performances in history, a night when the present and future of football shared the same stage.

Now, another generational talent stands in Messi’s path.

As Argentina meet Spain in Monday’s FIFA World Cup final, 19-year-old Lamine Yamal arrives carrying the weight of expectation and the promise of a new era. Having already overcome Ronaldo and Mbappe, Yamal now has the opportunity to defeat perhaps the greatest player of them all -- Messi. To overcome football’s defining figures across two decades in a single tournament would be extraordinary.

A graduate of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy -- whose most celebrated product is Messi -- Yamal has already collected major honours with Barcelona and lifted Euro 2024 with Spain.

His numbers in this World Cup -- one goal in seven matches -- do not fully capture his influence. His dazzling dribbling, creativity and mature decision-making have made him one of the tournament’s most difficult players to contain, strengthening his claim for another FIFA Young Player award after winning the honour at Euro 2024.

What makes Yamal’s journey even more remarkable is the quality of opponents he has overcome.

In the round of 16, Spain defeated Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, avenging their Nations League final defeat from the previous year. Yamal recorded the joint-most touches inside the opposition penalty area (six) and shared the highest number of shots (three) with Ronaldo before Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time winner sent Spain through.

His next challenge came against Mbappe’s France. After surviving early pressure, Spain fought back, with Yamal winning a crucial penalty. He also completed several accurate passes and created a big chance as Spain reached their first World Cup final in 16 years.

Having overcome Ronaldo and Mbappe, Yamal now has the opportunity to defeat perhaps the greatest player of them all -- Messi. Winning the World Cup after overcoming three generations of football icons in one tournament would be an achievement beyond his years.

For Messi, simply reaching this stage at 39 is remarkable. Having already won every major trophy available, he has continued to rewrite history, breaking records and collecting five Player of the Match awards during this campaign.

Ahead of the final, Messi leads the Golden Boot and Golden Ball races with eight goals and four assists, standing on the verge of adding another feather to his crown.

Whether Monday’s final will be Messi’s final World Cup appearance remains uncertain. He would be 43 by the next tournament, which will include matches in Argentina as one of the hosts. Only Messi knows whether another chapter remains to be written.

Whatever the future holds, Messi will not want to end this campaign as a runner-up. Like Diego Maradona, who lifted the World Cup in 1986 before losing the 1990 final, he understands how fine the margins can be. As he prepares for his third World Cup final, Messi will be determined to lift the trophy once again and further strengthen his legacy.

Adding another layer of symbolism is a photograph that has resurfaced before the final. During a 2007 UNICEF charity calendar photoshoot, a young Messi was pictured bathing baby Yamal. Nineteen years later, the two will stand on opposite sides of football’s biggest match.

A photograph that once captured the beginning of a story now frames its most dramatic chapter. Destiny may have brought Messi and Yamal together again, but sentiment will disappear once the whistle blows.

For 90 minutes -- or perhaps longer -- only one will walk away with football’s ultimate prize.
