Today is the fifth anniversary of death of Ekushey Padak-winning artiste ATM Shamsuzzaman.
Born at Daulatpur in Noakhali on September 10, 1941, ATM Shamsuzzaman debut venture as an actor was Abdullah Al Mamun-directed drama serial ‘Sangsaptak’, which was aired on Bangladesh Television. He played the role of villain named Ramzan in the super hit serial of that time, which also made him popular among the audience.
In 1972, he appeared as a war criminal in the film ‘Ora Egaro Jan’. He acted in Amzad Hossain’s film ‘Nayanmani’ and ‘Golapi Ekhan Trene’ lending his weight to the characters that were central to the story despite being villains.
Later, Shamsuzzaman earned nationwide popularity for his portrayal as a villain in Dilip Biswas’ film ‘Asami’.
He played different roles in over 400 films, including Surja Dighal Bari, Dayee Ke, Shasti, Hajar Bachhar Dhare, Molla Barir Bau, Chander Mato Bau and Man Basena Parhar Tebile.
The actor won six National Film Awards for Best Actor in Dayee Ke in 1987, Best Comedy Actor in Madam Fuli in 1999, Churiwala in 2001, Man Base Na Parhar Tebile in 2009, Best Supporting Actor in Chorabali in 2012 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
He received Ekushey Padak in 2015 for his contribution to the country’s film industry.
ATM Shamsuzzaman passed away on February 20, 2021.
