A Bangladeshi man named Ali Hossain, 49, was killed in firing by the Indian Border Security Force at the Dhabalguri border at Patgram upazila in Lalmonirhat early Wednesday.
Deceased Ali Hossain is the son of Abdul Gafur of Dhabalguri village under Jongra union at the upazila.
The border killing happened at a time when Bangladesh foreign minister Khalilur Rahman was on his maiden visit to India to hold talks with the Indian authorities in a move to take the ‘bilateral ties to a new direction’.
On Monday, just a day before the foreign minister had left Dhaka for New Delhi, a Bangladeshi youth was injured in firing by the Indian BSF along the border at the same upazila.
The Border Guard Bangladesh and local people said that a group of smugglers tried to cross the border with Indian cattle when a patrol team from the Indian 156th Battalion BSF’s Satgram camp opened fire on them, killing Ali Hossain.
BSF members allegedly dragged his body inside Indian territory, said personnel from the BGB that called for a flag meeting over the incident.
Patgram police officer-in-charge Nazmul Haque confirmed, saying ‘One Bangladeshi was killed at the Dhabalguri border. Police personnel have been sent there while the BGB is working on the incident.’
BGB 61 Teesta Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Syed Fazle Munim said, ‘A flag meeting has been called, but no response from the BSF has been received so far.’
At least 34 Bangladeshi nationals were killed by the BSF along the India-Bangladesh border between January and December 2025, according to the data from rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra.
