Google has released Android 17, its latest mobile operating system update, with the rollout beginning on June 16, 2026 for a wide range of Pixel devices.

The upgrade is available immediately on Pixel 6 through Pixel 10 series phones, including the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, as well as the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Other manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola, and Xiaomi are expected to follow with their own versions in the months ahead.

Bubbles

Bubbles, which previously worked only with messaging apps, can now be used with any application. A long press on an app icon turns it into a compact, movable window that floats above other tasks. On large-screen devices, including foldables, bubbles gather in a dedicated bar at the bottom of the display, making it possible to switch between apps, resize them, or maximise them with a single tap. Google says the feature is designed to keep things like maps, notes, or video tutorials within reach without interrupting the main workflow.

Screen Reactions

A new tool called Screen Reactions lets users record their phone screen and front-facing camera simultaneously. The feature is aimed at simplifying reaction videos, allowing a person to overlay their commentary onto clips, websites, or comment threads without needing a green screen or switching between apps. Screen Reactions will reach Pixel devices first this summer.

Gaming tailored to foldables

Android 17 introduces a foldable gaming mode that splits the screen into a top game view and a bottom gamepad panel, making use of the full display on foldable phones. Users can also remap external controller buttons to their liking. Under the hood, memory management has been improved to reduce frame drops and stutters during high-definition gaming.

Security and privacy tightened

Several new controls give users more say over their data, as per Google. Apps can now be granted temporary access to a device’s precise location rather than a permanent permission. When sharing contacts, it is possible to select specific entries instead of exposing the entire address book.

An enhanced Find Hub feature will also allow a missing phone to be locked using biometrics, so even if a thief has the passcode, they cannot access the device or disable tracking. Google has also reduced the number of PIN guesses allowed and added longer waiting periods between failed attempts.

Additionally, Live Threat Detection has been strengthened to block more suspicious apps and scams, and Advanced Protection mode has been expanded to guard against sophisticated attacks.

Smaller tweaks

Other changes include an option to hide app names on the home screen, a dedicated volume control for the Google Assistant, more customisation settings for the dark theme, and the expansion of parental controls to all Android devices. On the performance side, new app memory limits prevent individual applications from consuming excessive RAM, which the company says will improve overall speed and battery life.

Select high-end devices will receive Gemini Intelligence, a suite of on-device AI capabilities, later this summer. Google describes it as a set of proactive tools designed to help users get things done across their day, though all the specific features have not yet been detailed.
