AT LEAST 25 people were injured in a factional clash between two groups of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah district on Wednesday night.
The identities of the injured could not be known immediately, the police officials said.
The incident occurred at about 8:00pm at Hakimpur village in the upazila.
According to local residents, supporters of Bakul Biswas, president of the local union unit of BNP, have been in conflict with supporters of Tarun Biswas, president of the local unit of Jubo Swechchhasebak Dal, for some time.
An altercation between the two groups earlier in the evening escalated into a violent clash later at night.
At least 25 people from both sides were injured during the confrontation. Three houses were also vandalised during the clash.
Being informed, police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control, said Shailkupa police station officer-in-charge Humayun Kabir.
The injured were taken to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert untoward situation, the police official said, adding that legal action would be taken following an investigation if any complaint is lodged, he added.
Bokul Biswas and Tarun Biswas, however, could not be reached over the despite repeated attempts for their comments in this connection.
