Microsoft has recently released a series of emergency out-of-band (OOB) updates for Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server to address problems introduced by its January 2026 security patches, including an issue that disrupted access to cloud-based virtual desktops.
The company said one of the bugs affected Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server systems by blocking access to Microsoft 365 Cloud PC sessions. Following installation of the January Patch Tuesday updates, some users encountered credential prompt failures when attempting to connect through remote access tools.
Microsoft said the problem affected certain Windows builds using the Windows App for remote desktop connections, including environments such as Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365, where users were unable to sign in.
A second issue addressed by the OOB updates affected a subset of Windows 11 version 23H2 devices with Secure Launch enabled. According to a blog by Microsoft, those systems were unable to shut down or enter hibernation after installing the January 13 security update, instead restarting automatically.
According to Microsoft, the OOB updates are intended to restore normal operation for affected users and organisations and are being made available outside the regular update schedule due to the impact of the issues.
