The government has announced a nationwide program to expand rooftop solar power and create a new network of entrepreneurs and service providers, aiming to accelerate the goals of the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy 2026–2030.
Under the initiative, electricity distribution companies issued notices on Thursday to enlist qualified service providers across districts and regions.
These providers will deliver technical support, investment packages, customer service, and operation and maintenance facilities for rooftop solar and other renewable technologies, according to Thursday’s press statement of the Power Division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR).
The program is designed to open opportunities for local businesses, small and medium enterprises, youth, women entrepreneurs, and technology firms.
Local companies will also be able to partner with national‑level investors and experienced firms to strengthen their technical and financial capacity. Service providers will be selected through a transparent, competitive process, with both individual and joint ventures eligible to apply.
Officials said the effort seeks to decentralise rooftop solar beyond a handful of large firms and urban centres, ensuring expansion across all regions.
The government expects this to foster affordable and innovative investment packages, healthy competition among providers, and wider consumer access.
To encourage investment, the government is working on incentives including tax and duty benefits, low‑interest financing, and startup funding opportunities, with special emphasis on rural and remote areas.
According to the national strategy, renewable energy is targeted to supply 20 percent of Bangladesh’s electricity by 2030, including 5,500 megawatts from rooftop solar.
The plan underscores energy security, economic growth, industrialisation, and climate‑resilient development through a safe, affordable, and low‑carbon energy system.
Officials expressed confidence that rooftop solar will become a key driver of Bangladesh’s energy transition, while also creating new avenues for small businesses, local investment, skills development, and employment.
The initiative aims to engage entrepreneurs from every region — from Panchagarh to Patuakhali and Kurigram to Cox’s Bazar — in the country’s growing renewable energy market.
