Nawsheen Nahreen Mou became widely discussed and praised for hosting programmes, and also won the affection of audiences through her work in dramas. She has stayed away from showbiz for several years, yet in America she continues to host programmes on a regular basis.

Nawsheen has recently shared various stories from her life in America with The Daily Star.

Asked whether she misses acting, and the words "lights, camera, action", Nawsheen said, "Yes, I do. I miss hearing ‘Lights, camera, action’. But more than anything, I miss hosting. Hosting gave me immense love from audiences. I also received a great deal of love through acting. Even though I live far away, I miss both."

Nawsheen last faced the camera for a shoot in 2019. Since then, her life has taken a different direction. Life in America keeps her occupied with her household, her job and looking after the family business. She recently visited Bangladesh and spent a few days in Dhaka.

“My visit to Dhaka was wonderful,” she said. “I was invited to actress Deepa Khandakar’s home and Farzana Chumki’s home. Many other colleagues also invited me, but I simply didn’t have enough time. Singer Konal and actress Sporshia came to visit me at my home. It always feels special to return to Bangladesh. It is my own country.”

The visit was also an opportunity to enjoy some of her favourite foods. “This time I ate plenty of mangoes and jackfruit. I wanted my daughter to taste lychees, and I made sure she did. I love fish, so I enjoyed fresh fish while I was there.”

Although she is no longer active in Bangladesh’s entertainment industry, Nawsheen continues to host programmes in the United States. “I regularly host events here. Every year there are several programmes. I will be hosting the New York Bengali Film Festival during the first week of next month. I truly enjoy this work.”

Responding to another question, she said, "Even though I live in America, I stay in regular touch with the artistes here. I have good relationships with everyone. Romana Apu is there, she checks in on me a great deal. She did very good work in showbiz at one time. We also have good relationships with many families outside our own circle."

Beyond her media work, Nawsheen and her husband, actor Hillol, have established Movers BD, a company that assists people with immigration-related services. “We built this company together. We help people from Bangladesh who want to come to the United States.”


Nawsheen, Hillol, fellow actress Nova and Nawsheen's maternal uncle have also opened a restaurant in America. She said, "My parents have lived in America for many years, and my uncle has also been here for a long time. It is essentially a family business. We all built it together. Many Bangladeshis come to the restaurant, and that gives us great joy."

Their restaurant, NCafe 365, recently welcomed Dhallywood superstar Shakib Khan, who joined them to watch a FIFA World Cup match. “Shakib Bhai watched the match with all of us. We spent a wonderful time together and enjoyed the game,” she said.

Nawsheen added, "Shakib Bhai has a beautiful relationship with my parents as well. He is also very close to my uncle. Whenever he visits our restaurant, he showers my son with affection. He may be a superstar, but as a person he is truly wonderful. He visits our home, enjoys my mother’s cooking, and regularly speaks to my father over the phone. It has become a family relationship. Whenever he comes to the restaurant, we all have a great time together."

Finally, asked what life in America is like, she said, "Life here is very busy. I usually get time for myself only on weekends. My daughter is still very young, so I spend time with her. I also have to look after our family business and work a job from home. Altogether, it is a very busy life."

Despite building a new life abroad, one thing has not changed. When asked how much she misses Bangladesh, Nawsheen answered simply, “A lot.”
