Aston Villa have signed Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea for an initial £47.5m, with a further £17.5m in add-ons, according to British media.

The 25-year-old Senegal international, who has 37 caps and represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, joins Villa on a permanent transfer. His arrival comes with Ollie Watkins set to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

Jackson gives Unai Emery a recognised centre-forward after Villa started the season without one in their 4-0 defeat at Brighton. Watkins was unavailable, while Tammy Abraham and 17-year-old Brian Madjo were injured, leaving Emiliano Buendia to lead the line.

But Jackson is not simply a replacement for Watkins. He offers Villa a different way of playing.

Last season at Bayern Munich, Jackson scored 11 goals and provided three assists in 1,320 minutes across all competitions, averaging 1.0 goal involvement per 90 minutes. Watkins scored 21 goals and supplied five assists in 3,837 minutes, averaging 0.6 per 90.

Jackson also produced more shots and chances. He averaged 3.8 shots per 90 compared with Watkins' 2.6, and 2.2 shots on target to 1.2. His expected goals figure was 0.7 per 90, compared with 0.5 for Watkins, while he averaged 8.5 touches in the opposition box to Watkins' 5.6.

The biggest question remains his finishing. In his two Premier League seasons with Chelsea, Jackson scored 14 goals from 18.7 xG in 2023-24 and 10 from 12.3 xG the following campaign.

He has converted 18 of 61 big chances in England. Watkins, meanwhile, has scored 24 of 73 since joining Villa in 2020.

Jackson's biggest difference is perhaps how involved he is in attacks.

He averaged 46.6 open-play touches per 90 last season, compared with Watkins' 29.5, and completed 24 passes per 90 to Watkins' 11.6.

He also averaged 1.6 shot-ending carries per 90, 1.6 successful take-ons and 2.5 passes into the penalty area. Watkins' figures were 0.8, 0.82 and 0.7 respectively.

That suggests Jackson can contribute earlier in attacking moves rather than mainly occupying the final third.

His pressing can also add another dimension. Jackson averaged 34 high pressures per 90, slightly above Watkins' 31.4. He won possession 2.7 times per 90 compared with Watkins' 1.8, and regained it in the final third 0.9 times to 0.6.

The two are similar when it comes to running in behind, with Jackson averaging 13 runs per 90 and Watkins 12.7. Watkins, however, made slightly more runs which ended inside the penalty area and was stronger in the air, winning 1.2 aerial duels per 90 compared with Jackson's 0.7.

There is also familiarity between Jackson and Emery. Jackson previously played under the Villa manager at Villarreal, scoring 12 goals in 26 LaLiga matches during the 2022-23 season.

That relationship could be important as Emery looks to integrate Jackson into his system. Jackson has previously credited Emery with improving his understanding of movement and the game.

His development continued after Emery left Villarreal. During the 2022-23 LaLiga season, Jackson produced 0.56 non-penalty xG plus xA per 90, a rate bettered by only seven players with at least 1,500 minutes, all playing for Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.

He moved to Chelsea in 2023, scoring 30 goals and providing 12 assists in 81 appearances before spending last season on loan at Bayern Munich.

His opportunities in Germany were limited by the form of Harry Kane, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise, but Jackson still scored 11 goals in all competitions. Only Kane had a better rate of open-play Bundesliga goals per 90.

Villa are therefore replacing a 30-year-old striker who has scored 108 goals in 278 games for the club with a 25-year-old forward with a different profile.

Watkins has provided reliability, running power and goals. Jackson offers more touches, more ball carrying, more involvement in build-up play and more pressing.

Whether he can maintain his impressive per-90 numbers over a heavier workload, and whether he can improve his finishing, remain open questions.

But with Emery already familiar with his qualities, Jackson could change more than Villa's personnel up front. He could change how their attack is built around their No 9.
